About St. Peter

St. Peter's Story

The congregation was started as a result of Mrs. Ruth Longacre responding via letter in October 1972 to an ad placed by Pastor Harold Meissner in the Dallas Lutheran in September, 1972.

The initial meeting with Pastor Meissner was held at Four Mile Lutheran Church, December 17, 1972.

In February, 1973, Pastor Meissner met with several people in the home of Mrs. Ruth Longacre.  A Bible study class was started at this time and the first worship service with Holy Communion was held on Easter Sunday, April 22, 1973, in Gun Barrel City Hall.  Pastor Larry Davis was assigned to serve the newly formed organization.

On January 27, 1974, the group requested St. Peter Lutheran Church become a mission congregation of the Texas District of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod.

Our Charter Sunday was April 14, 1974, with Pastor E.J. Stelling installed as pastor.  On June 21, 1974, we became a member congregation of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod.  Pastor STelling served the congregation through March of 1975.

October, 1974, two acres were puchased off of Highway 85 (now known as Hwy 334) on Luther Lane.

The old Payne Springs Baptist Church was then acquired and moved to our property.  The building was dedicated in June of 1975.  It now serves as an Outreach Ministries Building.  In late 1979, we acquired an additional two adjoining acres facing Highway 334.

Groundbreaking ceremony for our new santuary was held on January 15, 1984.  The sanctuary was dedicated on April 21, 1985.

Construction began on the Education building in 2003.  The Education building serves our Sunday School children and our youngest folowers of Jesus in the Preschool.  St. Peter Lutheran Preschool began in August 2005.

Our mission is to reach out into the community to join hands with those who are looking for a closer relation with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
